Gourami (Subfamily Trichogasterinae): Most gouramis are peaceful fish, although males are often territorial towards each other. The well-known siamese fighting fish is often thought to be aggressive, but aggressions is usually only shown between males, or accassionally between males and females.
It is rare for other fish to be bothered, although male guppies may sometimes be nipped as the males may mistake them for rivals. It is more common to be attacked by nippy fish that are tempted by their flowing fins. In other species males may chase each other, but harm rarely results. Most are also not fussy about general water conditions and can tolerate a wide range of pH and hardness. The exception is the dwarf gourami which needs clean, slightly acid water that is low in nitrates. Gouramis are hardy fish that are good for beginners and can be mixed in nearly any community tank A good quality tropical flake or granules, frozen shrimp and worms foods, daphnia, beefheart.
