Marine Fish Invertebrates Amphibians Plants

Characins, Tetras (Suborder Characoidei):

All the species of this suborder come from South and Central America and tropical Africa. This large and diverse suborder encompasses approximately 14 families, including the family Characidae, the genuine American characins in the strictest sense which itself comprises around 13 subfamilies covering many species that are suitable for the aquarium.

Apart from a few exceptions, characoids can be recognised by their adipose fin, a small rayless fin found on the back close to the caudal fin. Almost all the species are shaoling fish or at least like to live in groups. They are seen totheir best effect if kept in groups of not less than four to six species. Almost all species are free spawners; after a lively and colorfull courtship display, the usually numerous batch of eggs is cast to fine leaved plants and their growth is then left to chance.

Characoids require clean, clear, oxygen rich water with a properly operating filter. These species are easy to keep and hence quite suitable for beginners. They prefer food of animal origen and will not scour the bottom of the tank for food; preferably from the surface or in mid-water. A Characoid aquarium should be free of floating particles of dirt wich makes then very suitable for delicate, contamination sensitive plants.
